Product attributes no longer defaulting to first option?

Hello,
It seems like something has changed with how attributes are handled after a recent release. For example, we use connection type as a product attribute. Previously, when multiple options were listed on a product, the first one in the list would be selected by default. Now, instead of defaulting to the first one, the system is just comma-separating all options and showing them all at once. It seems to affect all product attributes.

I also have the question group set as table and the question type as text list. Is this the intended behavior now if you have more than one product attribute, or should it be considered a bug? Just want to confirm before I start adjusting everything on my side.
